One-Hour Lifestyle

family of 4 | 1-hour photography session at sawgrass trailhead everglades

Can I just love on this family for a second? Hard to believe it’s been 9 YEARS since I photographed Avery’s newborn session but a bunch of family sessions later (don’t make me try to count), I’m truly honored that they continue to trust me in creating their family memories year after year. We always have so much friggin’ fun and this one-hour session to celebrate the end of the weird 2020 (and the end of dad’s quarantine beard) was no different. Always changing things up with a new location, this year’s photos were taken at the Atlantic Everglades Levee at Sawgrass Trailhead - a good reminder that we have beautiful landscapes both east and west here in Broward County. We may not have had the bright sunset we were hoping for, due to some clouds and rain, but we definitely made the best of it!

“So in love with our 2020 family pictures! It was overcast, sprinkled for a couple minutes and the wind was insane but everyone rallied and tammi.j.photography worked her magic and this ended up giving me some of my favorite pictures of all time!!” -Jess

2020 was so long that when I finally reconnected with one of my regular families that I photograph every year, I found out their family of 3 was now a family of 4. 🎉Since we missed the opportunity to do a newborn session for little brother because of COVID restrictions, we did the next best thing and met up for a one-hour session outdoors before the holidays. Rather than meet at one of the crowded parks this time of year, I’m happy this family trusted my something-different location recommendation when I asked them to meet me in my parents’ Davie neighborhood. The ridge I grew up exploring backs up to Tree Tops Park and has similar beautiful tree vibes with tons of hanging moss, oak trees and private trails.

I made the mistake of telling this family that sunrise photo sessions here in Fort Lauderdale beach rarely ever get rained out. After having to reschedule 3 times, we still got rained on. Oops. I’m grateful they were so easy going about everything - including the one-hour workout we had running through sand to keep their little one smiling as much as possible after recently getting over being sick. If you think photo sessions are a lot of sitting around… think again.

This was one of those perfectly-clear, beautiful, bright sunrise mornings that I dream about. The light was just perfect at this little spot at El Prado Park in Lauderdale by the Sea beach, South Florida for a sunrise maternity session. I love the quiet aspect the empty beaches and sunrise add to these photos - something that aligns perfectly with that pre-baby stillness.

From the moment I met this family, I could tell we were going to get along perfectly. They were the kind of family that just understood my relaxed, “lets have some fun” vibe without much instruction… the kind of family who I delivered “outtakes” to within their gallery (and here!), because I knew they’d appreciate the laughs. They had all traveled from different parts of the country to vacation in South Florida for the holidays, so an extended family photo session on our beautiful beaches (this one is right near Pompano Beach Pier, just North of Fort Lauderdale) made perfect sense. I can’t think of a better souvenir to take home - especially when home is at least 30 degrees colder.

Here’s a photography tip specific to South Florida… don’t try to schedule a fully-outdoor photo session in the middle of summer if you are not prepared to be flexible. After being forced to reschedule this session not once… or twice… but three times… we STILL had to sit in the car when we arrived to Orchid Park in Coral Springs to wait out rain. And not just any rain - like typical Florida-summer downpour. Luckily we finally got a dry break before the sun went down (& luckily these families are all local and completely understand).
